This past Saturday, the ACLU of Florida held a forum on the efficacy of sex offender residency restrictions. The event, moderated by CBS 4 Reporter Jim DeFede, sought to answer the question of whether the residency restrictions imposed on sex offenders are based on evidence or politics and, more importantly, whether they are actually making our communities safer. I think it’s good that this group seemed to agree residency restrictions do more harm than good, however, I find it distasteful for anyone to conclude that registrants who’ve decided to quit registering become a danger to the community.
What danger? re-offending? Where is the evidence to support this conjecture?
Maybe they just got tired of being “tagged” and displayed as a trophy for political atrocities and decided the punishment of being a registered citizen is not any worse than the chance of going back to jail.
Incidentally, anyone who supports the registry as a means of “control” for free men and women has no respect from me.
If the registration was used in a respectful manner as a source of information to help law enforcement to solve related crimes than it might be at least bearable;
But as a deterrent which brings public humiliation to registrants and their families, homelessness, social isolation, lack of employment, stress and anxiety from vague and changing restriction or potential vigilantes and etc…. I think not!
They all agreed “political” and NOT based on evidence.
This is the first news I’ve heard about anyone stepping up to fight the insanity that seems to be the norm in Florida. If I lived there I’d move!
The ACLU has done little to nothing to defend the constitutional rights of registered citizens in Florida. Why are you not fighting the constitutionality of Florida’s sex offender laws? An accused, i.e. convicted, sex offender in Florida loses these constitutional rights:
2nd Protects the right to keep and bear arms.
4th Prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures.
5th Protects the right to due process, and prohibits self-incrimination and double jeopardy.
6th Protects the right to confront the accuser.
8th Prohibits excessive fines and excessive bail, as well as cruel and unusual punishment.
14th Defines citizenship, contains the Privileges or Immunities Clause, the Due Process Clause, the Equal Protection Clause.
15th Prohibits the denial of the right to vote based on previous condition of servitude.
Where has the ACLU been the past 20 plus years will Florida was enacting these draconian laws???
